Guangdong Ocean University’s College of Mathematics and Computer has more than 8 years history. In 2016, original Information College(established in 2001), Software College (established in 2004), Science College (established in 2002) and Experimental Teaching Department(established in 2005) were merged to form Mathematics and Computer College.
College Leadership
Long Jun: Secretary of the Party Committee, responsible for the comprehensive work of the Party Committee. In charge of Party building, ideological and political education, party conduct and clean governance, ideology, cadre management, united front, and other work. In charge of the Party and Government Office, Experimental Teaching Center, and in contact with the Mathematics Faculty Party Branch.
Peng Xiaohong: Dean, Professor, responsible for the comprehensive administrative work of the college. In charge of the college's discipline, first-class majors, talent introduction, faculty team, finance, comprehensive management, foreign exchange, and other work. In charge of the Department of Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering Department, and in contact with the Computer Faculty First Party Branch.
Nong Kang: First-grade counselor, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, and Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission, assists the Secretary of the Party Committee. Presides over the work of the college Discipline Inspection Commission, in charge of students, enrollment, employment, trade unions, care committees, alumni, and other work. In charge of the Student Affairs Group, and in contact with the Computer Science and Technology Student Party Branch, Software Engineering Student Party Branch, and Graduate Student Party Branch.
Chen Ruyun: Vice Dean, Professor, assists the Dean. In charge of the college's scientific research, graduate teaching, and construction of degree programs, in charge of the Department of Information and Computational Science, and the Department of Data Science.
Yu Yinghuai: Vice Dean, Associate Professor, assists the Dean. In charge of the college's undergraduate teaching, professional construction, laboratories, innovation and entrepreneurship, and other work. In charge of the Department of Internet of Things Engineering, Computer Public Teaching Department, and in contact with the Computer Faculty Second Party Branch.
College Organizational Structure
The college has six teaching departments (sections): Department of Computer Science and Technology, Department of Information and Computational Science, Department of Data Science, Department of Software Engineering, Department of Internet of Things Engineering, and Computer Public Teaching Department. It has institutions such as the Party and Government Office, Student Affairs Office, Experimental Teaching Center, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice Base.
Faculty Team
The college currently has 148 faculty and staff members, including 114 full-time teachers, 12 with senior titles, 27 with associate senior titles, 40 with intermediate titles, and 38 with doctoral degrees. There is 1 doctoral supervisor and 15 master's supervisors. It has 2 outstanding teachers in Nan Yue, 1 school-level teaching master, 3 provincial-level "Qian Bai Shi" training objects, and 10 school-level training objects. It has 1 member of the Guangdong Provincial Undergraduate College Computer Category and Mathematics Professional Teaching Guidance Committee, 1 member of the Guangdong Provincial Software Engineering Professional Teaching Guidance Committee, and 2 members of the CCF Big Data Expert Committee.
Professional Construction
The college has two school-level key disciplines: Mathematics and Computer Science and Technology, among which Computer Science and Technology is a first-level discipline authorized for master's degrees. It has 6 undergraduate majors: Computer Science and Technology, Information and Computational Science, Data Science and Big Data Technology, Software Engineering, Information Management and Information Systems, and Internet of Things Engineering. In 2017, the major of Computer Science and Technology passed the acceptance of "Professional Comprehensive Reform Pilot" in Guangdong Province; in 2018, the teaching team of Computer Science and Technology was established as a provincial teaching team, and the major of Software Engineering was established as a provincial characteristic major; in 2019, the major of Software Engineering was rated as a provincial model major; in 2021, the major of Computer Science and Technology was approved as a national first-class professional construction point; in 2023, the major of Computer Science and Technology successfully passed the engineering education certification of the Ministry of Education.
Laboratories and Practical Teaching Bases
The college has 1 Guangdong Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, 1 Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center, 1 Ministry of Education Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Joint Laboratory, and 10 professional laboratories such as cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things; it has 12 off-campus practical teaching bases, including 2 national cooperative education and collaborative education practical teaching bases, 2 provincial college student practical teaching bases, 1 provincial graduate joint training base, and a college student innovation and entrepreneurship base of 1100 square meters.
Teaching Achievements
In the past five years, the college's teachers have undertaken 17 teaching reform projects at the provincial and ministerial level and above, approved 3 provincial quality courses, 1 provincial demonstration classroom, 2 provincial demonstration courses, 1 provincial teaching achievement award, and 7 school-level teaching achievement awards. There are more than 3,280 undergraduates and 29 master's students. The college has been ranked first in the school's enrollment rate for three consecutive years, with a graduate employment rate of over 98.6%, and the initial position salary of graduates has broken through 6,500 yuan, ranking at the top in the school.
Scientific Research Achievements
The college has established three scientifically structured, collaborative, and innovative scientific research teams, focusing on four research directions: big data technology, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, information security and software engineering, and marine information technology. In the past five years, the college's teachers have undertaken 13 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, 2 projects from the National Key R&D Plan, and 33 provincial and ministerial projects, with research funds reaching 19.75 million yuan. It has undertaken 5 municipal and departmental scientific and technological achievement awards, 56 patent authorizations, and 191 software copyrights. It has published 350 academic papers, including 99 papers included in SCI, 42 papers included in EI, and 6 monographs.
Talent Cultivation
The college attaches great importance to talent cultivation and vigorously cultivates high-quality, professional, and strong applied compound talents. The college has established a "College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice Base" and formed 20 student innovation teams such as C++, Network Maintenance, and Micro Cloud, attracting more than 2,000 students from the whole school to participate in innovation, entrepreneurship, and professional competitions every year. It has won more than 500 awards in various academic competitions such as "Mathematical Modeling," "Challenge Cup," and "Software Cup," and more than 50 "Great Creation Projects" at the provincial level and above. The majors of Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering have successfully implemented the "Excellent Engineering" talent training program.
Since 2013, the college's students have won more than 620 academic innovation awards in competitions such as the National College Students' Internet Plus, Challenge Cup, National College Students' Software Cup, and National College Students' Mathematical Modeling Competition, with a total of about 800 participants, including 189 national awards and more than 430 provincial and ministerial awards. Students have participated in nearly 100 provincial and ministerial scientific research topics and projects under the guidance of teachers, and have applied for 191 college student innovation and entrepreneurship projects, including 37 national projects and 60 provincial projects. More than 130 software copyrights have been registered, and 38 utility model patents have been applied for and approved.
Prospects and Future
With the implementation of the national innovation-driven development strategy, the widespread application and promotion of new technologies represented by big data, artificial intelligence, and blockchain in various fields, and against the backdrop of mass entrepreneurship and innovation, the demand for professional talents in computer, software, the Internet of Things, information and computing, and big data technology will continue to expand, indicating that the School of Mathematics and Computer Science will usher in better development opportunities.
Since its establishment, through the inheritance and development ofteachers, the college has made great progress in various undertakings, especially in the past 20 years after the establishment of Guangdong Ocean University. The college has accelerated the teaching, scientific research and technological development by introducing high-level talents, significantly improved the teaching quality and scientific research level, moderately recruited students, and completed the education from junior college to undergraduate and from undergraduate to postgraduate levels. With the rapid development of science and technology, the college has become an important base for the cultivation and scientific research of mathematics and computer in South China and even in China.
